Welcome!

FACS' mission is to celebrate and defend our public schools through advocating for fully funded, just, safe, and inclusive learning communities for all students. We believe that public education is a public good and that our schools are the heart of our community.

We aim to bridge the gap from home to school, school to leadership, and leadership to our key decision makers.

Our goal is to empower families to proudly choose to attend our public schools and to have our public school systems be the schools of choice in our community.

When you invest in our children, you invest in our community!

May 1 Day of Action- Not a Day off….but a day on!

Asheville City Schools will be closed on May 1 due to educators, parents, and community members going to march in Raleigh for the  “Kids Over Corporations” rally and march.   Since 2013, through a series of bills, politicians have chosen corporate tax breaks over investing in our kids and our classrooms. On top of this, they invested public tax dollars in the Opportunity Scholarship Program (aka vouchers). North Carolina spent more than $432 million on vouchers in the last school year alone, and the program is projected to cost the state more than $7 billion by 2033.

Teachers, staff, parents, students, and community members are marching to ask the legislature to Put Kids First, End Corporate Tax Breaks, and Reclaim Our Democracy. Below you will find more info about this day of action as well as some solidarity action steps you can take.

We want to start by saying that we don’t make this decision lightly. We understand the burden it places on families when schools are closed. However, North Carolina now ranks 50th in the country for public school funding and our “rainy day” has come. We can’t stand by any longer.

We do not see this as a Day Off – this is a Day On! Your student’s educators will be marching in Raleigh or here at our local May Day rally!

Here are  Solidarity Action Steps You Can Take to Celebrate and Defend Public Education!
